Herman “Fred” Bergner, 78, of Delphi, passed away peacefully at 5:40 am on Sunday July 30, 2023, at Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette. Fred was born to the late Paul and Mary (Cartwright) Bergner, on August 7, 1944, in Oregon, Illinois. On October 2, 1971 Fred married the love of his life Barbara (Leleniewski) Bergner, who survives.
Fred graduated from Oregon high school and later went on to study engineering at the University of Illinois. While in school Fred enlisted in the Navy where he served during the Vietnam Conflict. After retiring from the Navy, Fred went to work for Alcoa for several years, and later worked for Bank One where he was the facilities manager.
Fred was involved in many community events and organizations such as, Friends of Delphi Library, volunteer for Niches Land Trust, Indiana Master Naturalist, Delphi American Legion, Delphi Methodist Church, and he served as the former finance chair for the Delphi Methodist Church
Fred truly had a heart for serving others, and in his free time he enjoyed spending time outdoors, feeding the birds, traveling with his wife, and he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife; Barbara (Leleniewski) Bergner, daughters; Cathy Potter of Columbus, In., Debra (Tim) Hula, of Lafayette, In., grandchildren; Andrew Potter, Katie Hula, Caleb Potter, Isaac Hula, Haley Potter, Mary Angeles Vasquez, and Mary Sophie Vasquez
No public services are scheduled at this time. Cremation has been entrusted with Davidson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions in Fred’s honor may be made to the Boy Scouts of America. Messages of condolences can be made online at www.davidsonfh.com
